Abstract
Thai massage was also influenced by the two- to three thousand years old traditional Chinese medicine. The comprehensive system of Chinese medicine includes treatment methods like acupuncture, breath practices, movement, healthy nutrition, meditation and meridian massage.
The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) already for two- to three thousand years constitutes a comprehensive system that covers all aspects relevant to health and healing, reaching from nutrition science to prayers and meditation, from psychiatry to internal medicine.[1]
There are seven steps of healing. Besides acupuncture, these are acupressure, breath practices, movement, healthy nutrition, meditation and meridian massage.[2]
This broad scope of disciplines is serving the TCM well, as TCM is also using a comprehensive diagnostic system.[3] This diagnosis is based on eight categories and for methods of examination, which are: Viewing and seeing, asking, hearing and smelling as well as feeling and sensing.[4] The eight categories of diagnosis consist of four pairs of opposites, which are Yin and Yang, interior and exterior, cold and heat as well as emptiness and abundance.[5]
On the one hand TCM basically uses the same procedure of diagnosis as also does the western medicine, like exploring the patient's history (anamnesis) as well as a check-up of the body through the practitioner,1 but on the other hand the human being is considered a complete entity, which is harmonically embedded in the energy system of the macrocosm.[6]
