Abstract
Thai massage promotes health by harmonizing the energy flow. The Thai massage therapist follows the complex network of energy lines of the body.
Thai massage a form of therapy that, like most Asian medical systems, is based on the theory of energy flow between specific points at the periphery of the body and the inner organs.
In Thailand Thai massage is seen more as working with energy than working with the body. The reason for this is seen in the fact that the traditional Thai massage therapist is not guided so much by anatomical structures or physiological principles. He rather follows the complex network of energy lines of the body. Even the Yoga positions within Thai massage are seen primarily under the aspect of the energetic effect. The secondary effect is the improvement of flexibility and strength.
In the Indian Yoga tradition the energy, the energy that is worked with here, is called prana. In China it is called chi, and in Thailand it is called palang sak.
Prana is seen as an invisible and still power that takes effect in everything that exists. Prana is contained in our food as well as in the water, that we drink and in the air, that we breathe. Prana circulates inside and outside our body as a complex network of vitality. The Yoga tradition assumes that we can not exists without this vital power. On the theory of this energy and the invisible paths, the energy lines, through which it moves within our body, also Thai massage is based.
In the Yoga philosophy up to 72000 energy lines, nadis, are mentioned, that a running through our koshas. The five koshas are seen as a part and an extension of the physiological body. Similar to a Russian puppet, each kosha is contained in the next kosha that is located further outside.
The first layer, annamaya kosha, corresponds to the physical body. The second layer, pranayama kosha, is located directly above the surface of the skin and is seen as an energetic layer. The third layer, manomaya kosha, is the mental and emotional layer. Here is the source of thoughts and feelings. The fourth layer, viinanamaya kosha, is the intellectual layer, the location the ego and self-awareness. The fifth layer, anandamaya kosha, is the so called "body of bliss".
If the free flow of vital energy inside the koshas is blocked, the adequate supply with prana is not possible. This state can result in physical, mental and spiritual imbalance. Illness, indisposition and emotional problems are the result.
