Public pharmacies and drug stores selling herbal medicines are known already from the Ayutthaya-period (1350 – 1767). At the same time there already was a public clinic for the poor in the royal palace.[1]

The medical practitioners of king Narai the Great (1656 – 1688) compiled the first collection of medical texts, the Tamra Phra Osod Phra Narai, which described the various herbs used in curing.[2]

But not only the knowledge of herbal medicine, all important medical information was stored in the national archives in the capital Ayutthaya.[3]

The destruction of Ayutthaya by Burma in the year 1767, forcing a move of the capital first to Thonburi and soon later to Bangkok, where the Rattanakosin period started in 1782 resulted in a grave loss of medical knowledge. The kings Rama I, II. and III. played an important role in reviving the traditional Thai medicine. The basic insights of the traditional Thai medicine and more than one thousand recipes for herbal cures were fixed on marble tablets together with the basics of Thai-massage in the two temples of Wat Pho in Bangkok and Wat Raja Oros in Thonburi.[4]

Otherwise the traditional Thai medicine was taught individually form the teacher to the student, partially orally only partially using manuscripts.[5]
