The Thai medicine has not only been influenced by China and India, but also by Arabic medical knowledge. Under the rule of the Khmer king Chaivoraman there where already 102 hospitals.
Already under the rule of the Khmer king Chaivoraman there where 102 hospitals, being called arogaya sala, in his empire, which also included the territory that are north-eastern Thailand today.[1]
Later the Thais formed several kingdoms, but even though these where reined by Thais the majority of their population was not necessarily of Thai origin.[2] So the Chinese influences the Thai brought from their former living areas got mixed with the heavily Indian influenced traditions of the people they subdued and whose cultures the Thais adopted.[3]
The influences of the two major powers China and India where enriched by Arabian and Japanese contacts as well as relations with the neighbouring empires of Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia and esp. Burma, which was the main rival of Thailand for many centuries.[4]
It is sure that the Thai medicine has been heavily influenced by China as well as India, but also by the Arabic medical knowledge which reached southern Thailand, where many Muslim are living today, together with the Islam.[5]
As south east Asia was comparatively under populated up to the last century prisoners where the main booty in a war. By this an intense exchange of people as well as their cultures and medical knowledge took place.[6]
