According to the system of traditional Thai medicine diseases can be caused, except by the Tridosa, through:[1]

  1. Supernatural powers like the souls of the dead or also even spirits.
  2. Natural powers like imbalances of the four elements or of heat and cold.
  3. Cosmic powers like the positive and negative influences of the moon, the sun and the stars on the health of the humans.
  4. Kimijiati, which equals the microbes and parasites of modern medicine.
Basically diseases always originate from the Tridosa, at least they can be traced to it.[2] The concept consists of a chain of four elements:
  1. The body is the location of the causes;
  2. the causes are the location of the elements;
  3. the elements are the location of the diseases;
  4. and the diseases are the location of the food[3]
This chain is analyzed backward in the process of diagnosis, meaning the food is causing the diseases which in turn influence the causes that lead to ailments in the body. One has to point to the fact, that food is considered to be the source of diseases.[4] The traditional Thai medicine uses a comprehensive approach on the problem, similar to the theory of multifactor causality of diseases of René Dubos,[5] not an examination process concentrating only on narrow basics. Always connections between diseases and numerous reasons for them are considered. For instance a strong exhaustion, physical or psychological stress can weaken the body so that it gets affected by bacteria.[6]
