Abstract
Yoga before everything else is a science of self-knowledge and the further development of the mind. This mind, being free of any uneasiness but still active, can function as the instrument to bring us more satisfaction, clarity and freedom.
In the sixties and seventies of the last century Yoga was considered a domain of odd and strange persons, but since then a fundamental change has occurred to the role of Yoga in the medicine. The exercises of Yoga have become a matter of course especially for preventive treatments.[1] The number of people practising Yoga actively increased decisively during the last decades,[2] not only in the Federal Republic of Germany but elsewhere as well.[3]
Yoga before everything else is a science of self-knowledge[4] and the further development of the mind. This mind, being free of any uneasiness but still active, can function as the instrument to bring us more satisfaction, clarity and freedom.[5]
The aim is to strengthen the ability for concentration. The absent mindedness is considered a natural reaction by Yoga. The exercises of Yoga intend to help us to calm down the movements of the mind and the soul and thus obtain more clarity in the processes of perception and cognition.[6]
